THE BABAJI HOSPITAL OF HOLISTIC MEDICINE AND YOGA THERAPY

In Tamil Nadu, India has been treating patients and training yoga therapy practitioners for 25 years.

The Founder

Yogi S.A.A Ramaiah (Yogiar) was a pioneer in the field of Yoga Therapy. Trained as a physical therapist at Mumbai’s G.S. Medical College from 1958-61, he subsequently operated a free rehabilitation clinic in San Thome, Chennai. In 1986, he established a College of Yoga Therapy at Athanoor, Tamil Nadu, where he would personally treat patients and conduct classes. This later became a free Hospital of Holistic Medicine and Yoga Therapy.

Treatment

Treatment is undertaken by qualified medical staff. The hospital is unique in that for every case, a team of diverse health practitioners work together to treat the patient.  Until his Mahasamadhi in 2006,  this team was headed up by Yogi S.A.A Ramaiah himself.   It also included a Western allopathic doctor,  physiotherapist, nutritionist, ayurvedic practitioner etc.

The treatment typically includes diet, posture, breathing, meditation and sun treatment.

Free treatment

The hospital is also unique in that it operates on a donations only basis.  Thus it alleviates the suffering of the poor people who reside in the surrounding countryside and towns.

They are also trained in human anatomy and must understand the anatomical relevance of each posture.  They must also understand how the 18 basic asanas can be transformed into the 8.4 million variants.   Students are assessed via course work and written examination.

Yoga Therapy stage two

The second stage is also one month long with the same contact hours.  It deals with remedial Yoga and Physiology.  Here students must understand the cause of various illnesses. They must also display a thorough knowledge of why certain postures and foods are indicative or contra indicative in the case of an illness or a combination of illnesses.  They are allowed to shadow the treatment of  patients at the hospital and must then offer their own diagnosis and prescriptions.
